There are basically two approaches to training for a medical assistant diploma as a medical assistant. One is to go to a two year college and get an associate’s degree. The other is to take a shorter and less expensive course of study and get a medical assistant diploma.

There are good reasons to take one route or the other but the reasons are all about you. To most employers it doesn’t matter that much which route you take. They want somebody who can do the work they need done.
Generally employers prefer to hire certified medical assistants even though medical assistants are not required by law to have any sort of license or certification. The certification is evidence that somebody thinks you know what you are doing. It isn’t like show business where you can audition for the part you want.

Fortunately both the degree program and the medical assistant diploma program can provide you with the education you need to pass the certification exams. That takes care of what the employer wants. The next question is about what you want.
If you think you might want to go on to higher education later, getting an associate’s degree might be a good start. You will be taking college level liberal arts classes along with those required for your medical assistant diploma. The credit you earn toward your associate’s degree in many cases can be applied toward a bachelor’s degree.
On the other hand an associate’s degree requires two years of full time study. If you are too busy to attend school full time or if you don’t have the financial resources right now you will want to get started in your new career as quickly as possible.
Medical Assistant Diploma Reason 3
A medical assistant diploma program can usually be completed in nine months to a year. The only classes are those directed at making sure the student can pass the certification exam and do the work they will need to do. There are no liberal arts classes to take up time and distract from the main goal.
What will be included are classes in both administrative and clinical skills. There will be classes in anatomy and physiology, first aid and CPR. The student will learn how to check and record vital signs, give injections, draw blood and assist the doctor with examinations and procedures.
The administrative part of the program will teach the student everything necessary for running a medical office. The student will learn how to process insurance forms, transcribe medical records and use the various office machines. A medical assistant diploma program will teach what employers want a medical assistant to know.
